I had a great 2 days with room 8 and it was wonderful that after lots of hard work ALL children completed all their work and put it together and we set up the displays in the children's home class. We did poetry, art work, first thoughts about science and a scientist and photography.

I like being able to teach without having do lots of data collecting. I liked using BH's blog to help us with poems and his feedback about Ella's poem. BH said to write a line about the leaves on the tree, one about the leaves falling and the last about the leaves on the ground.

Such a simple format can lead to a poems like Ella's.

Autumn Leaves

Leaves look beautiful together on a tree.

When the leaves fall it is so sad because their life is over.

But, there are piles of leaves on the ground, to play with.

Science can also help with literacy through poetry. I remember how Te Whaiti said 'science is art", it can also be a big help with literacy. R8 also did some great art with the autumn leaves - I will post some of the photos of their art work soon.

R8 and science around the school

Room 8 boys picked this as their science picture because they "found it interesting but they didn't know what it was." I wonder how many real scientists do that?

I have R's class for the 2 days and have moved on with the next stage of my very own science inquiry. I have gone on to the Autumn Leaves part using B.H's ideas from his blog. There has been some great writing and I have been brave ehough to post E's poem and also to ask him for some advice about my science fellowship.



Next time I will do stage 3 of my planning and I will do the ice melting part with R8 later in the day with using the chalk and photo work that I saw on line about melting ice in different situations. For the rest it will be Autumn Leaves.

I love doing right across the school classroom release because I can do science thinking. I am loving what I am doing.

I had R4 today last of the senior classes -some digbat bat kids but also some great thinking kids. I like the thinking that Owhata kids are doing

I forgot what a treasure this man was as I came across his blog http://leading-learning.blogspot.com/ . He has wonderful writings about inquiry, science, learning etc etc so I am going to make sure I spend time on it. There are several 'experts' he shares about -some I have seen and heard, others I have read about and there are some new ones to catch up about.

I am reminded about things like observational drawing, using the local/school environment also.

Year 5 and 6

The activity about taking photos of 'science' around the school withR7 had a higher level of thinking today. I need to work out how to get the photos from school (teacher write) to home-saving them into my documents, jetflash?? so I can put them in my blog.
Their ideas were R6 window mural because its Papatuanuku and Te Whaiti says "science is art." and the rings on the tree trunk, the big tree because trees give us oxygen and that helps keep us alive, the bell - because it makes a sound and the swimming pool area because it has lots of different materials being used in the rebuilding were todays ideas.

It was great to hear D. saying 'our work today is like doing research."
